Foley High School’s Aerospace class has introduced a very interesting new piece of technology called “The Phantom 2 Vision Drone.” Mr. Forbes recently told us about the drone and the future of the program.
What is this “Drone”?
The Phantom 2 Vision Drone has a 3-AXIS CAMERA STABILIZATION system, which is a built-in high precision 3-axis camera stabilization system that brings a whole new level of smoothness to your aerials and gives you total creative freedom in the sky.
It has an integrated GPS auto-pilot system that offers position holding, altitude lock and stable hovering, giving you constant smooth flight so you can focus on getting the shots you want.
You can also program a flight path using your smart phone with our 16 waypoint Ground Station system. Tilt the camera up and down, take photos and shoot video all while the Phantom 2 Vision+ flies autonomously.
Why did you get the drone?
“I decided to purchase the DJI Quad copter to show my students more of the applications of aviation in everyday life. We also are required to learn about GPS positing and navigation, and this drone also is a great teaching tool for that.
We decided to ask for permission to fly it at a few home games to see if the video would be useful there. It turned out to be quite a hit for both the Football and the Band. We were able to give them views of the field that was never possible before.“
Did you get what you paid for?
“I was honestly amazed at the quality of the pictures and video and quickly realized that this tool could be used In many other areas.”
What’s next for the drone?
“ The next venture we are investigating is to integrate the drone video into the scoreboard to allow the announcers to provide an “eye in the sky view”. This upgrade could also possibly allow the coaches to have immediate access on the sideline of each play.
The drone may even be getting it’s own YouTube channel soon.”
Do the fans like the drone?
“ I have been told that several of the still photos we have taken on the drone have been a social media hit. The pictures are all over people’s Twitter and Facebook profiles.“
