Parents of misbehaving kids often try to come up with different ways to punish their children, because sometimes they obviously have become use to the usual “time out” or loss of TV privileges. Children these days feel that they can get away with more than they can actually handle.
According to this logic, I can completely understand where Russel Fredrickson, a barber from Snellville, Georgia, is coming from with his “Benjamin Button Specials.” If you have not seen this incredibly hilarious hair style, then you are completely oblivious to all types of social media, maybe the news as well.
The “Benjamin Button Special” haircut consists of shaving the crown of the child’s head and leaving the sides long. Fredrickson is a very well-known hair stylist in his city, so he offers these haircuts to parents free of charge as a form of punishment. But on the flip side, he also gives free haircuts to students who make all A’s.
This haircut is a great tactic to get the children’s mind in the right way of thinking, but it is also a haircut that could possibly make them have child development problems due to then suffering from low self-esteem.
Washington-based psychotherapist Xanthia Bianca Johnson says it only makes the problem worse.
“There’s lots of research that supports the fact that when a child is blamed or shamed it triggers their nervous system, and when the nervous system is shut down, it is directly connected to the brain. The part of the brain that processes logic gets shut off and it can actually stunt physical and emotional growth.”
There are several different ways for parents to punish their child for being precocious or disobedient, for example, yard work, physical conditioning, and restricting social media and electronic devices.
A child should know the difference between right and wrong, but on the other hand, so should the parents. Making your child walk around looking like a grandpa is something that can not only traumatize them psychologically.
So parents, take the time to think over what your child’s punishment should be before you jump to drastic measures.
