Dos & Don’ts for Spring Break

March 23, 2015 by Amanda Major 1 Comment

Spring-Break

The Spring Break season has officially begun!

The Gulf Shores Police Department encourages all visitors and local residents to educate themselves and become familiar with some of the municipal ordinances that help keep the City of Gulf Shores safe and enjoyable.

D0:

1. Have Fun (Legally.)

Come on, it’s spring break. Go have fun, and enjoy the warm weather. Go to the beach, cinema, or amusement parks. You are only young once, so why not have fun?

2. Buddy System.

Remember way back in 1st grade? Your teachers did the buddy system so you wouldn’t be alone, and the other person can look out for you. Well, put that mentality in place and make sure that you have someone watching your back when you go hang out for the day.

3. Travel.

Got some extra change you been saving up for something special? Spend it on a vacation, even if it’s somewhere a few miles out-of-town. Go explore the world! Most people in this world live and die in the same corner for their entire existence. There are people out there that have never even left the county they were raised in.

4. Try something new.

Have you ever wanted to try something but never had the possibility? Well, spring break gives you that possibility. Put this phrase in your head,  “Anything is possible!”

5. Ask the locals where to eat.

Hey, the locals know what’s up! They know where and when to get the best seafood in town. Don’t be afraid to ask. We don’t bite. Most of us locals will be more than happy to give you a little insight about the area.

6. Drive Safely.

This one might be a no brainer, but the amount of reckless drivers I see is a tremendous. Many people almost get into car wrecks because they are too worried about how crowded the beach will be. And put your cell phone away!

7. Stay Inside

If you have social anxiety like I do, stay inside and watch Netflix, and look at your friend’s photos about their vacation on Facebook. You could invite friends as well for sleep overs or a movie night.

Don’t:

1. Drink and Drive

Another obvious tip. Drinking and driving is not safe at all! You might feel invincible, but that’s the alcohol talking to you. Call an Uber, Taxi, friends, or even family members to drive you home. If no one is available, just crash on your friend’s couch. Avoid this as much as possible, because you might wake up in a place you don’t want to be in.

2. Sleep on the beach

You may find this shocking. It is illegal to sleep over night at the beach. If you’re tanning during the day and you doze off, that’s no problem. You just can’t get your tent, sleeping bag, and sleep for the night on the beach. That’s what the camp grounds are for.

3. Public indecency

No one, and I repeat, no one wants to see you flash your mangoes. Yes, there are those few that might enjoy it, but the majority do not want to see your goods. You can still feel confident without revealing the whole packet, if you catch my drift.

4. Displaying fraudulent identification card

Clubs and over-aged parties are bound to pop up. The law recommends that you do not use a fake I.D to enter into something that you are too young to enter in the first place. Yet, you may be reading this, and you are saying “OMG, I’ve never been caught, so I’ll be fine.” You may never be caught, but there is always that chance that you will be.

5. Give an alcoholic beverage to a person under 21

We are not in Europe, guys. The legal drinking age is 21. Whether you like it or not, that’s how it is going to be. Giving a minor alcohol is a major offense in the eyes of the law. Don’t do it!
