Being a first-time Choir member, this article was very special to write.
On Thursday, March 19th, Foley’s Concert Choir and Women’s Choir attended the State Choral Festival in Mobile. We left around 8:00 AM. Thanks to fundraising, we collected enough money to get a charter bus and new uniforms for the men. Our adventure began with a stop in Loxley for breakfast.
Interesting tidbit. While chowing down in Burger King with several other Choir members, ya boi (being the outgoing, eccentric cat he is) asked if he could pay with “love.” Long story short: I rapped a quick 16 bars and received a (
FREE) complimentary chicken biscuit and medium drink.
Nevertheless, we proceeded our travel to Spring Hill Baptist Church and arrived approximately at 11:00 AM.
Our Women’s Choir performed first, impressing the judge with a well-prepared rendition of When I am Silent and O Salutaris Hostia. Their performance received a One rating (Superior).
As the anticipation built before Concert Choir’s performance, many of us began to get antsy. The reader mustn’t forget that many, more than half of us, joined the choir program this semester and only had nine weeks to prepare.
Even with all the nerves and jitters, we nailed our performance. The songs sung by Concert Choir included Sing For Joy and Rose I Send to You.
Concluding our on-stage performance, we went directly to the sight-reading portion of the state assessment. Ask any of the members of our choir, and they will assure you they thought we would definitely get a Three or Four. However, we received an overall One, including a Two (Excellent) for sight-reading.
I would like to end this article by saying thanks to Mr. Will Hamm. Without his dedication and persistence in making us a better Chorus, none of this would be possible. Another thanks goes to each member of choir. Without us, Choir would definitely not be possible. So to everyone who put in the hours of hard work, thanks.
