A review of the traveling Broadway in New Orleans performance of Aladdin
By Sydney Hotard
As an avid musical lover, when I heard that an amazing season of traveling Broadway shows was going to New Orleans this year, I was ecstatic! I was even more thrilled when I heard that the first show of the season was Aladdin.
Aladdin is a classic Disney movie, and I can see where some might have concerns about the insanely magic-centric movie being translated to a live stage. Fear not, my friends, for the stage show is just as, if not more, magical than the movie. It is colorful, gorgeous, and just the right mix of funny, emotional, and extravagant.
When I saw the show, I was completely blown away. Everything was done so amazingly, from the cast to the set design. The genie wears hundreds of Swarovski crystals, dancers pop up out of the ground, and when I asked one of the chorus members (who I regretfully didn’t get the name of) how in the world the magic carpet flies around the stage, he replied: “Disney magic.”
All in all, to conclude this ramble of praise and admiration for a show well done, if you have the chance, go see it! It’s so fun, very true to the movie but also very different, and it’s a fantastic, completely magical experience.
