Foley High students recently attended a two-day MODEL UN conference.
According to Model UN Sponsor Brandy McGuire, “Our kids were awesome! I got so many comments from the other teachers in how poised, positive, intellectual, and engaged our students were. Most of these students had never participated in MODEL UN and were shy at first, but by the second day, all of our kids were raising their placards to participate in debate.”
Students debated many topics with other schools from around the county such as human trafficking, genocide in Myanmar, climate change, cyber warfare, trade tariffs and many other topics. They worked within their committees to draft resolutions for these problems while representing a certain country.
Mrs. Brandy McGuire continues, “They then took those resolutions to the entire general assembly to be voted on. All of the resolutions passed. At the beginning of the year, our students chose which countries they wanted to represent at Baldwin UN this year. Foley’s countries were The Netherlands, Mexico, and North Korea. The kids loved the experience, and I believe they walked away with many valuable lessons and skills that will help them in the future. Go LIONS!
