The Joe Jefferson Players are a theatre company in Mobile, Alabama, that perform Broadway classics, musicals, comedies, and more.
They have performed many shows throughout the years, but I’ve only seen three: Cabaret, Mamma Mia, and Young Frankenstein. Now, I don’t know how much you know about these shows, my friends, but they could not be more different from each other.
Cabaret is a classic Fosse musical (right up there with Chicago) full of jazz and sexy songs that ends with a dark twist. This was the first I had seen of the Joe Jefferson Players and boy oh boy, was I in love! The show was done so artfully and beautifully, every character cast perfectly, the set, lighting, and orchestra were all impeccable.
After Cabaret, I saw Mamma Mia. I get it if you don’t know Cabaret or Young Frankenstein, but if you don’t know Mamma Mia, shame on you. Mamma Mia is a fun show full of Abba music about a girl finding her father after many, many years. The Joe Jefferson production of Mamma Mia was a work of art, once again. The dancing and singing were so fun and dance-worthy, it was hard to stay in my seat for the whole show.
Most recently, I’ve seen Young Frankenstein. The Mel Brooks musical is absolutely hilarious, and the Joe Jefferson Players captured the humor perfectly. Each character (even the background characters) had a personality that made you giggle, and I’ve never heard an audience laugh louder.
All in all, I congratulate the Joe Jefferson Players for continuing to put their time and passion into theatre, something that can be enjoyed by so many people. I encourage all of you to go and see the next show. It’s a wonderful way to spend an hour or two and a wonderful way to support local theatre companies.
Bravo, Joe Jefferson Players. Bravo.
