Jessa Aquino is a senior at Foley High School and a member of the graduating class of 2019. She was born in the Philippines and has lived here in the United States for almost four years. Her favorite classes are piano and art, because they’re easy. After school, she usually watches Netflix and plays video games. Watching Korean dramas with her sister is one of her happy pills! She enjoys playing volleyball and badminton with her dad. She also loves spending time with her family and friends.
Who would you like to thank and why ?
I would like to thank my family, because they love me for who I am. They’re truly a blessing, and they are always there for me, even when they need to come rescue me from a bad decision. Also, they know how to make me happy because they know me the most, and I’m thankful for that.
I would like to thank my teachers for not giving up on me and for guiding me throughout my journey, and also I’d like to thank my friends for making my high school years memorable.
The best advice I would give a 10-year-old me would be?
I would say stay focused on all your classes, but do not forget to have fun as well. Enjoy every moment of your life, because you will never be as young as you are in this moment and don’t take everything so seriously. Do not be in such a hurry to grow up and just enjoy your childhood, because there is plenty of time to be an adult but never enough time to be a kid.
What do you miss most about being a kid?
When I was a child, I never carried worries, stress, and sadness to bed. I miss those days where you could always find excitement in anything. I miss the days where I only had to worry about very simple things and also the times where the only reason why I cried was because I didn’t have enough candy.
What is your favorite outdoor activity?
If I had to pick my favorite outdoor activity, it would probably be hiking. It’s always good to get some fresh air. Also, I like the slow movement, because it gives me plenty of time to admire the view and take photos.
What is your favorite time of the day/week/or month and why?
My favorite month of the year is May, and not just because school is over for the year, but it is also the month where I can visit my country and spend more time with my family. Visiting my country is very exciting to me, because this is when I can hang out with my friends there. May is the month when I can do anything I want without thinking of any school work.
If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?
An event that I would like to witness is the first landing on the moon by Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969. The educational benefits of the landing revolutionized the mindset of mankind, having bigger goals of reaching other planets. Seeing this event would shed light on the mass controversy if man actually landed on the moon.
What do you usually do on weekends?
On weekends, I don’t really do many exciting activities besides going to church on Sunday. After church, I spend time with my family and friends. On Saturdays, I work for the whole day and watch Netflix after work.
Tell us about the friends you’ve made thought your school years.
I have a friend named Savana that really made my high school life happier beginning in my sophomore year and continuing until now. I never thought we would be best friends. We didn’t know how to speak English back then, so the only way we communicated with each other was through Google translate. She’s sometimes annoying, but she’s still such a good friend. She’s always there for me whenever I need help. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, and we’re stronger than ever. She is more than a friend. She’s my sister and my partner-in-crime.
What was the best gift that your parents gave you?
My parents have given me so many material gifts already, but the best gift that I have ever received was my siblings, because I truly enjoyed my childhood because of them. They were my first best friends, and they’ve never failed to guide and protect me.
If you could do anything, what would it be?
If I could learn to do anything, I would like to learn how to speak as many languages as possible. I think that there’s not a better way to connect with other people and cultures than traveling and learning new things. If I could speak every language I wanted to, it would be a way easier to get to know their culture. I love to travel!
