While sophomores and seniors completed testing recently, the freshman class attended three important seminars.
Wendy O’Toole, Mrs. Morrell Baxter, and Tyson Reed helped organize the career rotations for 9th grade students on testing day. They had a lot of help from the freshman homeroom teachers who manned the tables at the reality check seminar.
Students attended a program called “Your Money, Your Life” that demonstrated how difficult it can be to get through the month on a designated salary.
As part of the Auburn Extension with the Mega Reality Check Activity, each table represented a part of adult reality-bills, day care, mortgage, etc. The students received a salary and job information as they walk in the door, and then they visited each table to pay for car, rent, etc. It was a great learning activity!
Students were provided information from Coastal Alabama Community College about careers in aviation.
Mark Sloan, Director of Aviation at Coastal Alabama Community College, and Maurice Mitchel from VTMEA Aviation Industry, talked to students about careers, salaries in aviation, which are in very high demand and high wage fields.
Ed Bushaw, from the Education Enrichment Foundation of the the South Baldwin Chamber, described their new Youth Apprenticeship program.
Mr. Bushaw provided information regarding Baldwin County’s Hospitality Industry and the apprenticeships available to Foley High students, who can earn college credit and a job through the hospitality program.
Freshman students walked away from all three seminars with valuable information for their future.
