Curt Herbig is the owner at Culver’s, one of Foley’s newest and most popular restaurants along Highway 59.
I asked him some questions about his job and what it’s like to work at Culver’s.
Q- What is a typical day in your job?
A- I get to work with wonderful people and talk to guests. On busy days, I start with opening books and going through e-mails. I get on the floor around 10 o’clock to usually check on the employees and see if everyone is in place, and I make sure the restaurant is clean and prepared for the day.
What inspired you to become the owner of a restaurant?
I started with Culver’s at 18 years old, and I started working for my brother, who opened his own Culver’s. I got to meet Craig Culver, the man who opened the original Culver’s, and I was inspired by his values and the way he treated his employees. He even meet his wife at Culver’s, and it’s really too bad they didn’t get married there! I also enjoyed the hospitality that the restaurant had.
What do you expect of your employees?
A nice smile, a helpful hand, and a good heart. If you have that, I will teach you everything else.
What do you do to make a good work environment for your employees?
I show them I care. I go above and beyond for them by providing a good, healthy, fun environment, and I let them know the stopping point and realizing the work expectations.
What has been the biggest challenge for you so far?
One of our biggest challenges has been getting the word out that Culver’s is not only as a restaurant but a business who helps the community. We were the first Culver’s restaurant to open in not only Foley but the state of Alabama.
What makes Culver’s different from other restaurants?
Hospitality goes above and beyond here. We treat not only the employees as family, but we treat everyone who sets foot into Culver’s as family.
Are you looking at expanding her in Foley?
We have no plans on expanding here in Foley but definitely here in Baldwin County.
What do you consider a long term employee, and how do you expect to get and keep long term employees?
I consider a long term employee someone who takes care of the people, someone who takes care of the business. To keep an employee long term, people need a chance to expand their career to move up to a higher level.
Do you expect Culver’s to expand their menu?
Yes. Some new products are LTO, which means Limited Time Offer. If they sell well, then they go on to become full menu items.
Where does the name Culver’s come from?
Culver’s is a family business, so the name came from founders Craig, his wife Lea, and his parents, George and Ruth Culver. They founded the business in Saux City, Wisconsin, in 1984.
How long have you been with Culver’s?
I’ve been with Culver’s since 2001, along with my wife.
What is Culver’s best know for?
We are best known for Butter-burgers, cheese curds, and FRESH frozen Custard. But most importantly, we are known for our amazing and caring crew.
