Coastal Alabama Community College held a welding competition at the Monroeville campus Thursday, Oct. 17th, 2019. The welding competition consisted of dual enrolled high school students from Escambia, Monroe, Baldwin, and Washington counties. The competition consisted of two divisions supporting the junior and senior high school level.
Andrew Coutts, a junior from Foley High School, competed in two different contests areas. He placed 2nd in the Butt with Backing competition and 3rd in the Open Butt competition. Andrew competed in both areas of competition at the senior level.
An open butt joint is made by butting two pieces that lie in the same plane, against each other with a gap of zero-to-one metal thicknesses between them. Butting the pieces tightly against each other makes them easier to weld but also increases panel distortion.
Andrew has been enrolled in the welding program at The Fairhope Academy for the past three semesters.
