Mrs. Feely and Mrs. Turner’s AP Language classes just finished reading Truman Capote’s nonfiction novel In Cold Blood.
As an extended activity, students participated in a mock crime scene investigation.
Mrs. Turner explained, “While reading the novel, students were engaged with the details of the investigation, which Capote gathered through extensive research and interviews. During close reading and analysis of the novel, we compared the writing style with the language of the an authentic criminal profile. This inspired the idea of writing criminal profiles for fictional characters that committed murder, and later to reach out to the Foley Police Department to organize a mock crime scene for our students to solve. This activity made the learning authentic and it made students realize the ongoing and detailed process of a criminal investigation. Many of the students are interested in pursuing careers related criminology so this was especially helpful to reinforce those interests.”
A special “Thank You” is extended to the Foley Police Department for helping put together the awesome crime scene.
