My name is Katherine Rodriguez. I am a junior at Foley High School graduating with the class of 2020. I am a part of the soccer team, Junior Ambassadors, HOSA, Key Club, National Honor Society, and Homeroom Representatives. In my free time, I like to go for walks with my puppy and watch Netflix.
Hi there! My name is Heriberto Leal and I am a junior in Foley High school graduating in the class of 2020. I am pretty involved in my school with at least 11 organizations. I serve as the vice president of my junior class, and officer positions for other clubs. I am a ride operator at The Park at OWA. My post graduation plans include attending a four-year university majoring in Biochemistry where it will help me attend medical school afterwards. When I finish attending medical school, I hope I get to become one of the top pediatric neurosurgeons in the south. I strive for high achievements where I have participated in many conferences and service events that have led me to become a strong leader in my community and school. My dream is to know that my parents are definitely proud of me when I become a doctor, because they immigrated to the U.S. to provide my sister and me better opportunities in life.
What are your post graduation plan? My post graduation plans include attending a four-year college majoring in a biomedical science that will help me enter medical school. The plan is to graduate college by 2024 and medical school by 2028. After medical school, I want to pursue a specialization in pediatric neurosurgery where I will be operating on children’s brains. Hopefully, I do not change to another specialization, because that has been my plan for years – to be a neurosurgeon.
Who would you like to thank and why? I would like to thank Mrs. Luker for being head of health science classes. Through her classes, I have been able to develop medical skills that I thought I would never know during high school. As well, knowledge she has provided to me since my freshman year has been invaluable. Not just her, but my parents have also been so supportive about my choices of who I want to be in life.
What are your extra curricular activities? My extra curricular activities include HOSA, Key Club, Leo Club, Junior Optimist, NTHS, FEC, FBLA, Student Council, Interact Club, Newspaper staff, and serving as the junior class vice president. Through these activities, my leadership and communication skills have developed more. I have learned to listen to others with empathy, to ensure that everyone’s voices are heard.
If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? If I won the lottery, the first thing I would do to go ahead and pay for my education. School tuition is very expensive, especially medical school. I would not waste my money on random stuff when I can invest my money with my education.
If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? If I had to work on only one project for the next year it would be finding a cure for HIV. A patient in London was recently cured, but there is still some research to be done. In addition, it would be great to be part of this project.
What was an experience that made you a stronger person? An experience that has made me a stronger person is knowing I can go on stage and speak in front of hundreds of students. I had the opportunity to show my love for health science and talk about how good of a leader I am. This truly made me a stronger person, because I know I am able to do it.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? If I could learn to do anything, it would be to fly an airplane. Flying an airplane seems very cool, and some pilot friends say it is easy to learn to fly. Then if I have my own private jet in the future, I could fly it.
What is your favorite time of the day/week/or month and why? My favorite time of the month is payday, which happens every two weeks. I love it because I get to spend my whole paycheck on clothes or food.
If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be? I would love to witness the capture of Osama Bin Laden. It would have been nice to travel with the Navy Seals to Pakistan where he was captured, plus to re-live the moment of grace when he was captured.
The best advice I would give a 10-year-old me would be? The best advice I would give a 10-year-old me would be to stay in school and do good. Obtaining an education is very important because that is the only way to be successful in life. Do not rush into having a love life, because eventually everything comes at the right time.
